Still The coach

Last week, several players from the 1963 National Championship team gathered with Edith and Darrell Royal for a lunch of Mexican food, reminiscing, and book signing. DKR:  The Royal Scrapbook, had just been released and the guys wanted autographs from the Royals.

Just shy of 50 years ago, this group of "boys"--Lee Hensley, Harold Philipp, Olen Underwood, Frank Bedrick, Clayton Lacy--and the rest of the No. 2-ranked 1963 Longhorn football team were about to face # 1 OU in the Cotton Bowl. Texas had seen 2 national championships evade them after a 1961 6-0 TCU win and a 14-14 tie with Rice in 1962 knocked the 'Horns from their # 1 rankings. The '63 match was hyped as one of those "Games of the Century". Instead, UT dominated OU, 28-7, gained the No. 1 ranking and kept it the rest of the season, winning the school's first national championship.

Let's hope for a similar outcome tomorrow.
