First soccer-style kicker in NCAA history to kick a field goal. UT placekicker Fred Bednarski became the first soccer-style kicker in NCAA or pro football history to kick a field goal. The kick, with Walter Fondren as holder, came on October 19, 1957, in a 17-0 victory over Arkansas. 

First Brain Coach. In 1957, Coach Darrell Royal and The University of Texas hired Lan Hewlett as academic advisor to the football team.  Texas was the first school in the nation to create such a position.

First Victory using Two-point conversion. Although he originally opposed the adoption of the two-point conversion rule, Royal became the first coach in NCAA history to win a game with the two-point play in his 15-14 victory over Oklahoma--his first--in 1958. Royal would win 12 of the next 13 contests against OU.

First nationally televised Cotton Bowl game. NBC broadcast the 1953 Cotton Bowl game in which Texas beat the Tennessee Vols, 16-0. 

Entrance Exams.The University of Texas was the first state school in the nation to require entrance exams of all students. President Logan Wilson instituted these, along with tougher academic standards, in 1956.

First night-time bowl game.  The 1965 Orange Bowl, the first bowl game held at night, saw the Longhorns upset Joe Namath and No. 1-ranked 'Bama, 21-17.

First team to run Wishbone Offense.  In fact, we invented it.  Emory Bellard and Darrell Royal devised the powerful offense in 1968.

YAC stats. In 1977, Sports Information Director Jones Ramsey and assistant SID Bill Little started recording a weekly stat category called "Yards Made by [Earl] Campbell After First Hit by a Tackler". UT is the first school to track Yards After Contact.

First-ever Big 12 Champions. Saturday, December 7, 1996, in an upset over No. 3 Nebraska 37-27 at Arrowhead Stadium.

First in College Merchandise Sales. For seven years running, The University of Texas has topped the list of licensed college merchandise sales. Made about 9.5 million from July 2011 to June 2012. UT leads the nation in vanity license plates sold, with A&M coming in 2nd and OU third.
