1958 Sugar Bowl

Coming off the worst season in UT football history with a 1-9 record under Coach Ed Price, Royal's first Longhorn team surprised everyone by finishing 6-4-1, taking 2nd in the SWC, and being selected to play Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl.

The players were happy to be winning again, but in his zeal to field a winner in his first bowl game at Texas, Royal instituted two-a-day practices in the weeks before the Sugar Bowl and worked the team hard. Bobby Lackey told Bill Little in What It Means to be a Longhorn, "We worked out so hard before that bowl game, we were happy when game time came, and we didn't want to play any more ballgames...Bear Bryant had nothing on Coach Royal when Bryant took those guys to Junction. Darrell knows that...."

The # 7 Rebels waxed the # 11 Longhorns, 39-7, at the time the 'Horns worst bowl defeat ever.
